Mirror of the Soul: Navigating the Path of Self-Reflection

Self awareness. What does that mean? Is it superficial awareness? Is it external definitions placed on us? Is it being aware of how bad our life is? No! Self awareness is being aware of exactly where we are. Aware of ourselves. What makes us tick. Being fully self aware nourishes our soul. It brings a smile back to our face. It lets the sun shine brighter. It welcomes us home. We forget that we forged this path for a reason. We let others direct our life. We got caught up in making others happy. We believed that somehow it would make us happy. Did we sell the rights to our biography? Did we let someone else take over our story? Whether it be an actual person or ourselves giving up hope. Somewhere along the way we stopped writing our own story. We believed that our happy ending was ripped away. We believed no one would ever understand. We believed it so much, it came true. Self awareness brings us back and places the pen in our hand. It frees us from what ending others chose for us. We recognize the impermanence of ourselves and others. We forgive easier knowing that others will soon be gone. We forgive ourselves. We stop blaming others and recognize that our unskillfulness contributed to altering our story. We stop searching for answers from others and find the answer in ourselves. Concentrating on ourselves allows us to gain insight into what brings us our own suffering. We see that nothing comes from nothing. No-one can make us better or happy or complete. Not even our dearest loved ones can fill that space. If we are brave enough to seek understanding within ourselves, our loved ones benefit. We can write the story. We can transform. Dare to write your story.

Use these three journal prompts to practice self-reflection.

  1. Where is my head right now?

  2. Where is my heart right now?

  3. What brings my heart happiness?

As you reflect on these three questions you will begin to see patterns and stories that will guide you too deeper questions.
